Remembering Aristide Laurent

Aristide “A.J.” Laurent, born September 15, 1941 in Magnolia Springs, Alabama, died in his Los Angeles home on October 26, 2011.

Laurent was a LGBT civil rights advocate and one of the co-founders of The Advocate. He fought against police harassment against the gay community, and participated in the 1967 riots at LA’s Black Tavern Bar. Laurent was also active in ACT UP in the 1980’s, advocating for AIDS/HIV patients.
