October 10 – California Governor Jerry Brown announced today that he signed two important transgender rights bills into law. The Gender Nondiscrimination Act (Assembly Bill 433), designates “gender identity and expression” as a protected status at work, in schools, in housing, at public accommodations and in other settings. The Vital Statistics Modernization Act (Assembly Bill 887) makes it easier for transgender people to get a court-ordered gender change and updated birth certificate.
The Gender Nondiscrimination Act is very important for promoting workplace equality for transgender individuals. Transgendered people face unemployment at a much higher rate than the rest of the population (14% according to Injustice at Every Turn, published by the National Center for Transgender Equality / National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in 2011).
Out & Equal applauds Governor Jerry Brown Governor Brown, Assemblymember Toni Atkins, and Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal for their important contribution to workplace equality for all individuals.
