Get Your Story Out; Help Others Come Out at Work

Videos That Tell a Story – The It Gets Better Project

Out & Equal is excited to be partnering with the creators of No Dumb Questions – –  on this project, and we look forward to collecting your stories!

As you may know, the It Gets Better Project, launched in September 2010 by syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage and his partner Terry, has inspired individuals, politicians, activists, celebrities, organizations, sports teams and corporations to share their stories about bullying and harassment, and how life can “get better.” These video messages are aimed at LGBT youth who may be in situations where they can’t imagine a future for themselves, to show them what the future may hold in store for them. To date, over 10,000 video messages have been created, and the project continues to evolve, with a website, a recently published book and exposure on national commercials (via Google Chrome).

Being Out at Work – Get Your Story Out
At Out & Equal, we know that the telling of one’s personal story is one of the most powerful ways we can communicate, make personal connections, and create change. And, we know that coming out, and being out, as LGBT in the workplace can be daunting, and that everyone has a different experience.

Therefore, we, and thousands of others, would like to hear your story.

We invite you to submit a short video or written story for our Get Your Story Out project. By telling your story, you can help others on their own path to being out–and equal–in the workplace.  We think that this kind of sharing, in addition to training and education, is the best way to keep the conversation about equality going, and can move us all towards a safer, more supportive workplace.

Questions to consider for your video or written submission:
If you are out at work—what steps did you take to come out, and stay out, at work? What were your challenges, and how did you overcome them? Did your Employee Resource Group (ERG) or Human Resources (HR) department support you, and if so, how? How has Out & Equal impacted you?

If you are not out at work–what roadblocks or challenges are you experiencing? Have you approached your ERG or HR departments? Have you experienced resistance or harassment? How can others help support you?
